Taxi Body Welcomes Bala’s Move

The decision to extend the time frame for the renewal of taxi permits from 28 days to 60 days within expiration has come as a relief to the Fiji Taxi Association and its members.

Association acting national president, Saiyad Nabi yesterday thanked the Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport- Parveen Bala and welcomed the decision.

He said this would allow many of those who were affected to get back directly to their daily source of income.

Mr Nabi said by doing this, Government would allow provisions for more legal transport to provide services.

“Many who had to leave their taxi businesses can now come back,” Mr Nabi said.

“We have people who have even lost their taxi permits while they were in hospital beds or while they were overseas, but this decision of our Government of the day has changed the lives of many.”

Mr Nabi said Government had indeed heard of their situation and grievances.

Mr Bala had announced on Tuesday night that 60 days was the revised number of days in which taxi permit holders could get their permits renewed.

With things looking in favour of bettering the taxi sector, the vice president of the Association, Aslam Khan has also requested the minister to look to reduce the Defensive Driving Course  passing marks from 90 per cent to 50 per cent.

“We are happy that the minister has taken his time out to consider our welfare, but we request if he could further assist us in reducing the passing marks for DDC,” Mr Khan said.

“Because we have to take into consideration that most taxi drivers we have  are illiterate but they are sharp at driving and other things which doesn’t involve English-reading and writing,” he said.

He said this would further help the industry get human resources.
