10 Police Officers Charged With Assault

Close to 20 per cent of people charged in the month of February for Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence Offences) were Police officers.
This was revealed in the latest Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) statistics update.
Out of the 60 people charged, 11 were Police officers.
Of the 11, one Police officer was charged for stealing a laptop. 10 have been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho has reiterated that the Force will not condone dirty cops.
“That shows that we do not tolerate Police officers involved in those matters. We have nothing to hide. If Police officers are involved, we take them to task like any ordinary citizen,” he said.
“We are happy that the ODPP has released those statistics because some people tend to think that we hide these things – but we are very open about it, and I’ve said it before, I don’t condone having dirty cops around and that is what we are doing through our Department of Internal Affairs and Investigation done by institution itself taking our own people who have done wrong to task.”
The February statistics on Serious Crime (Non-Sexual Violence Offences) reported that:
“There were 60 people charged with a total of 43 separate incidents in February.
The offences were murder (2), manslaughter (3), aggravated robbery (11), aggravated burglary (8), theft (4), money laundering (1) assault causing actual bodily harm (5), act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (2), arson (1) and setting fire to crops (1), infanticide (1), abortion (1), procurement of abortion (1), possession of illicit drugs (1), unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs (1).”
