A workshop which will set a platform for deeper regional integration in trade data and strengthening of relationship between the Melanesia Spearhead Group countries ended yesterday in Suva.

The Peer Learning Work Programme Trade Data for Solomon Islands Officials was attended by officials from the Solomons and Fiji.

Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali, said Solomon Island colleagues gained valuable experience over the two weeks.

“I am hopeful that you will implement the best practices learnt in Fiji to achieve the desired objectives under your trade policy framework,” he said.

Mr Ali said they were happy that the first peer learning was completed successfully.

“This training programme is evidence of the knowledge and expertise that we have within the Pacific,” Mr Ali said.

“We just need to explore what we have and use it for our benefit and development.”

Mr Ali said the workshop benefitted Fiji too.

“Our Fijian agencies have also had the opportunity to have their peers evaluate what they are doing,” he said.

“Through this process we will also be able to enhance our procedures and processes.”

He said they had discussions on trade related areas such as trade, meteorology and standards.

“We hope to stay in contact with our colleagues from Solomon Islands to see how we can progress work in this area,” he said.

“At this point, I take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the immense contribution made by lead agencies, such as Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority, Reserve Bank of Fiji and Fiji Bureau of Statistics.

“In particular, I express my appreciation to Fiji Bureau of Statistics, where the participants spent three days, learning data cleaning and presentation.”
