Organisers of the 2017 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s are finalising teams for the 41st tournament on March 24-25 at the ANZ Stadium.

Marist Rugby Club president Lawrence Tikaram confirmed only 10 spots are now left for the men’s and four for the women’s categories.

“We are on track, the biggest challenge now is to finalise teams,” Tikaram said.

“In the Oldies division all the spots have been filled.”

The organising committee has given time to three Japanese clubs and the Papua New Guinea national team.

“If they don’t confirm by Friday, then we will give those spots to local clubs.”

Tikaram said they were working with the Fiji Rugby Union to organise the referees for the tourney.

Some of the prominent teams that have confirmed participation are Police, Army, Wardens, Yamacia and Coral Coast 7s winners First Light Taveuni would be fielding two teams.

Tikaram also commended the effort by the island teams.

“The first team to register was Levuka Rugby Club from Kadavu and there was also a team from the old capital Levuka, Ovalau, showing interest to take part.

“These teams have been preparing since December when we launched the tournament,” he said.

With four spots available in the women’s division, tournament director administration Caroline Sorby calls for more women involvement.

“I’m encouraging more women to participate,” Sorby said.

She has been involved with Marist Rugby since 1977.
