Athletics Fiji’s technical advisor Albert Miller who was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 spoke of his journey at the Olympic House, Suva yesterday.

This was part of the build-up to the Bank of South Pacific (BSP) sponsored 2017 Fiji Sports Hall of Fame.

Miller was being recognised for his contribution to athletics for over 30 years. Hailing from Savusavu, he is also the longest serving athlete in the country.

The 59-year-old started his athletics career in primary school as a jumper and later was given a scholarship to study in the United States where he pursued his sporting career.

“I actually started athletics when I was in primary school,” Miller told SUNsports.

“I went on to Levuka Public School where I continued with my athletics career and took part in high jump. I was the champion in the sub junior, junior, intermediate, senior and open grade which led me to a long career in athletics.

“I was fortunate enough to get a private scholarship to go to US to further my studies. This is where my athletics career really blossomed and it took me to another level.”

The veteran athlete also participated in his first decathlon event in 1980 where he broke the national record. That record still stands today.

Miller also said that apart from athletics he also had an interest in soccer as well.

“So it wasn’t always athletics that I played but I did play soccer for Levuka and Savusavu for a few years.”

However, Miller was appreciative towards FASANOC for recognising his contribution and inducting him into the Fiji Hall of Fame.

“I think if anybody would have received such recognition to me it is a climax of all the years of dedication put into the sport as a true amateur.”
