Major road rehabilitation works will be carried out to improve Mara Road through Raralevu Village.

It will improve the level of safety and cope with an increasing traffic volume.

Fiji Roads Authority general manager Network Operations and Maintenance Aram Goes said Mara Road (Raralevu Road) now operates as the main highway for travellers on Kings Road.

Mr Goes said there was a need to rehabilitate the road after it was damaged by heavy rain that was experienced following a series of Tropical Depressions.

“Preparatory works are continuing for road rehabilitation and sealing through Raralevu Village, with work scheduled to commence on March 8,” Mr Goes said.

“The Road works will involve resurfacing, road widening, grading and in some instances the reconstruction of roads throughout Mara Road.”

Mr Goes said current challenges include the water lines that have been buried at shallow depths.

“We are facing challenges with Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) water lines which have been buried along and across the roadway, in some instances less than 100 millimetres under the surface,” he said.

“As a consequence, the pipes break easily and the volume of traffic on Mara Road.”

All works are expected to be completed on March 23,  if weather permits.
