Being the only woman in a male-dominated field was not tough at all, Josivini Tinai the new graduate of Australia-Pacific Technical College said confidently.

The 24-year-old of Naqara, Naitasiri, was among 192 APTC students who graduated yesterday at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus.

Ms Tinai said her dream to work in an engineering field would now come true.

“I always have been inspired by how men work with heavy machinery and the techniques they use to work,” she said.

“I wanted to be the woman in the men’s field to show them that women also can do their job too.

“I had a few tough times in the beginning of the lecture year to cope with the engineering terms and working my way around the machines.

“But the boys in class have been very supportive and helpful.”

She said she would encourage every women to work hard in whatever field they were working in.

“No work is easy but neither is hard if we put our effort and heart to it, we will achieve the best,” Ms Tinai said.

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jone Usamate, said with 65 females graduating, he said women were taking up the challenge of entering the traditionally male-dominated trade sectors, and excelling.

“Vocational and trades workers make an important contribution towards the growth of our country,” the minister said.

“There will be more opportunities for the graduates to train further and pursue higher education at national and Australia educational institutions.

“The skills and knowledge gained during the training is only a stepping stone.”
