A 23-year-old native of Levuka, Ovalau achieved a first for his family with a Certificate in Engineering and Fabrication at the Austrlian-Pacific Technical College graduation on Friday.

Seremaia Baleturaga graduated with 192 of his colleagues at the ceremony held at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala campus in Suva.

Mr Baleturaga said coming from a big family, but being the first to graduate from a tertiary institution was an honor.

“This certificate in engineering fabrication trade was another step to a successful future,” he said.

“I am hoping to become the first in my family to graduate with degree in this field.

“I know God will guide me and help to further my education in the future.”

He said his family was his inspiration to overcome all the hurdles to eventually receive his certificate.

“Seeing my family and how we have struggled in the past to overcome the circumstances inspired me to work hard and achieve something that could help my family forget those times,” he said.

“It is not easy to handle certain situations and you know you cannot do anything.

“I have seen my family go through those situations and I told myself then that I will work hard and do what all I can to bring smiles on their faces.”
