Library Is A Place For Fun: Chief Librarian

The chief librarian of the Suva City Carnegie Library says children did not come to only read but have fun and make friends.
“The library is a place for fun, enjoyment and a place to make new friends. It is not only about reading,” said Maureen Peter Shariff, chief librarian at the Suva City Carnegie Library.
She said they had readings everyday where children come to the library after school from 2.30pm-4.30pm.
“We have a staff on duty at the children’s library and the staff is there to help whoever needs assistance in reading if they are stuck in their homework. We also teach them how to research and other minimal things that are required for children to learn,” she said.
She said the World Wildlife Day celebration at the library was an attempt to localise the event.
“We are focusing on turtles. There are many species of turtles but we are trying to focus on a few and we are trying to work with the stakeholders,” she said.
“This is just a start-off. What we are trying to teach the children is not to throw rubbish at the beach and to respect the wildlife.”
