I want to educate my villages on how to build cyclone proof homes, says newly graduate of Australia-Pacific Technical College student, Manasa Naitoko.

The 49-year-old of Rewasa, Rakiraki, was among 192 other APTC students who graduated on Friday at the University of the South Pacific, Laucala Campus in Suva.

He said his experience of Tropical Cyclone Winston last February prompted him to join APTC.

“My village members and I had faced much devastation when TC

Winston hit Fiji and that was what inspired me to join the carpentry course to learn how I can build a better cyclone proof home,” he said.

“I wanted to learn as much skills and techniques I could to go back to the village and teach them the skills so they could build better and much stronger homes.

“Being one of the first from the village to graduate today was an honor for me because it was not just for me or my family but it was for the whole of the village.”

He said he joined APTC to learn but his pursuit for excellence would stop there.

“APTC was one of the many steps that I will have to take in the future for my villagers,” he said.

“If I get further education opportunities to learn more and help my villagers and other members of the public, I will not step back.

“I want to be as educated and knowledge so that our children have cyclone proof, safer homes over them in the future.”
