The Telecom Fijiana 7s rugby side face Australia in their Cup quarterfinal clash in Las Vegas today.

The Fijiana side walloped Ireland 31-5 in their second pool match yesterday to book their spot in the Cup quarterfinal. The Iliesa Tanivula coached-side earlier on edged out Spain 21-19 in their opening match but finished in second place in pool B after losing to USA 7-14.

Tanivula commended the efforts of the team on the first day of competition.

“It was a good start for the girls. I was impressed with their performance and we are looking forward to the quarterfinal match against Australia,” he said.

Tanivula also confirmed the girls are fit for the second day.

“There is no injury in the team and the girls are all looking good,” he added.

 

GREAT START

Good start for Fijiana in their opening match as they beat Spain 21-19. The Spanish got off to a strong start as Amaia Erbina got in for the first try while Miriama Naiobasali struck back for Fijiana with a solo effort try as they settled 7-7. Both sides looked really sharp in attack. Maria Ribera’s went in for Spain’s second try before Rejieli Daveua made another break to score Fijiana’s second try as they led 14-12 at halftime. Team captain Ana Maria Roqica sealed it for Fijiana with the final try following a break from Rusila Nagasau who took two defenders with her before unloading a pass to Roqica to score.

Wailotua, Wainibuka lass Lavenia Tinai was successful with her three conversions.

 

SHOW OF CLASS

The Telecom- sponsored side then thrashed Ireland in their second pool match 31-5.

They showed impressive pace and power and Ireland were slow off the blocks. Fijiana led 12-0 at halftime. They then continued on with their dominance in the second half with Timaima Ravisa,  Daveua and Roqica finishing it off with style.

 

FIGHTBACK

Captain Roqica scored the lone try for the Fijiana side as they went down 7-14 to USA.

Roqica’s try in the opening half was converted by Tinai. Alev Kelter scored the equaliser for the host side in the first half.

USA showed a lot of composure as Naya Tapper showed her pace and power as she drove downfield for a vital try.
