A Police officer watched helplessly as his five-bedroom home was burnt to the ground at Varadoli in Ba on Friday afternoon.

Police Constable Pravin Kumar was at his home with his daughter and housemaid at around 4.30pm when the fire started and caused a loss of at least $56,000 to the house and a further $50,000 to household items including jewellery.

“My housegirl saw some smoke coming out from the bedroom at the back and when I opened the door the room was already engulfed with huge flames,” PC Kumar said.

“When I went back into the sitting room the fire was already there as it was travelling through the ceiling of the house.

“We could not save anything because of the intensity of the fire and it is just the clothes we have on and my mobile phone.”

PC Kumar said his 12-year-old daughter was in the shower and had time to wrap a towel around herself before fleeing the house.

He said he had moved into the house 17 years ago.

His wife, Pravin Lata was at work and his son, a brother-in-law and brother were also at work.

PC Kumar managed to save his car with the help of neighbours while another vehicle, belonging to a teacher which was parked in the frontyard sustained some damage from the heat of the fire.

He said the house was not insured.

A National Fire Authority employee at the scene of the fire said they were investigating but could not comment further.
