Sweet seller charged with rape of girl, 11

A man who sells sweets in Lautoka will remain in Police custody for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl last week in Lautoka.

The accused, 30, also faces a separate charge of indecent assault.

It is alleged that the accused had entered the young girl’s home on February 27 in Lautoka and raped her. His name was suppressed by Magistrate Rangajeewa Wimalesema. He appeared in the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday. He will reappear in the High Court in Lautoka for mention on March 17. No plea was taken.

May 8 plea for man accused of sexually assaulting minors

A 34-year-old man charged with five counts of sexual assault will take his plea on May 8.

It is alleged that Ravinesh Lal sexually assaulted three minors, aged nine, 10 and 11 in 2013 at Wainikoro in Macuata, Vanua Levu.

Lal’s lawyer, Jiten Reddy, told Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon yesterday that he needed clear and readable disclosures from the prosecution. Mr Reddy said he had received the disclosures, but it was not readable.

He also said Lal was ready to take a plea. Police Prosecutor Constable Selai Qolitabua said he would follow through with the request.

The case has been adjourned for plea and disclosures.

Bail ruling today for sexual assault, rape accused

The High Court will give a bail ruling later today for a man charged with sexual assault and rape.

The matter was called before Justice Achala Wengappuli in Suva yesterday.

John Rohit Pal’s defence lawyer, Anil Chand, applied for bail for the second time on the grounds that Pal will be changing his residential address to Nausori. Hence there would be no interference with the victim. Pal is charged with two counts each of sexual assault and one count for rape. It is alleged that Pal between January 1 and January 31, last year at Nabua unlawfully and indecently assaulted an 11-year-old girl.
