The British High Commission will continue to support the empowerment of women and girls in Fiji.

Melanie Hopkins, the British High Commissioner to Fiji, gave this assurance last night at a cocktail at her Suva residence to commemorate International Women’s Day.

“In the United Kingdom, all British High Commissions across the world are tasked to undertake activities to promote International  Women’s Day,” said Ms Hopkins.

In terms of moving forward this year, Ms Hopkins said the UK had a bilateral support system whereby the British High Commission had worked with the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement to help support girls.

She said Britain was excited to see Fiji back in the Commonwealth.

One of the key things leading up to the next summit of the Commonwealth was going to be about women’s empowerment and tackling violence against women, she said.

“There are a lot of areas where we can draw from Fiji and areas where we can collaborate in as well,” she said.

She also said that all men and women could have a very important leadership role on this subject.

“It is certainly not just something for women and it is small steps that can lead to big steps,” she said.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya said International Women’s Day was in recognition of women’s role in Fiji’s economy, public or private sector.

“It is a great day to say thank you to those who have led the way. The country has done well with respect to putting women on equal footing,” said Mr Koya.
