Government and the government of Japan yesterday formalised a grant aid programme worth $1.82 million to support Fiji’s on-going rehabilitation efforts for Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Ambassador of Japan Takuji Hanatani officiated at the exchange of notes signing ceremony.

This is additional funding provided by the Government of Japan. It was excluded apart from other series of assistance provided to Fiji after Cyclone Winston which included emergency relief items worth US$170,000 (FJ$354,467) provided to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). In 2016, a grant aid of $5.72m was provided to assist with restoration and rehabilitation efforts.

Other assistance included Fiji’s ‘Adopt a School’ programme where Japan assisted with $3,163,503 for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of classroom buildings for four schools. This project is ongoing.
