Staff and students of Andrews Kindergarten in Nadi celebrated Holi with songs and  dances yesterday.

The festival of colours brought together unity amongst the students as they sang traditional songs and danced with joy and laughter in commemoration of the annual Hindu festival.

The students were then treated with sweets provided by some parents.

Teacher in charge, Sangeeta Devi-Singh, was happy that the weather was on their side which enabled students to celebrate the auspicious event in style.

“Students have gathered here today to mark Holi celebrations, despite the rainy weather for the past few days. We are very happy that the weather has turned out like this,” Ms Devi-Singh said.

According to Ms Devi-Singh, students would be having a break this coming Monday.

The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many, it is a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forgive, and mend broken relationships. It is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

“Parents along with teachers have made sweets to share with students and the students will also get to enjoy playing with colours.”

Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi where people gather, perform religious rituals in front of the bonfire, and pray that their internal evil should be destroyed as the bonfire starts.

The next morning it is celebrated as Rangwali Holi – a free-for-all carnival of colours, where participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and coloured water.
