After eight weeks of training

After eight weeks of training away from home, 10 landowners were badged as forest wardens yesterday under the Ministry of Forests.

These wardens will now go back to their districts and villages to help their communities practice the best methods of conservation and sustainability. Landowner and farmer Semesi Ketewai, of Nadarivatu, was nominated to undergo the training through the Fiji Pine Trust, representing the Savatu Pine Scheme.

He said the training enhanced his knowledge and skills on how to maintain sustainability in agroforestry.

Apart from mahogany, Mr Ketewai grows sandalwood which he reckons isa simple savings project for the future generations.

“We learnt a lot of things about conservation and best practices about sustainability,” Mr Ketewai said.

Now we will go the provincial meetings and advocate on forest management, he added.

The project was initiated under the Fiji Forest Policy 2007 where sustainable forest management was labelled a major priority.

Under the Fiji Forest Policy 2007, the participation of resource owners as partners in enforcing wood processing regulations was encouraged. The forest training is a major breakthrough or a milestone achievement in engaging partnership with the communities for the Ministry of Forests.

The wardens received their certificates and badges by the Ba Provincial Holdings Company Limited chairperson, Ratu Meli Saukuru, at Natabua in Lautoka.

The total number of forest wardens in the country is 31.
