Vodafone Fijian 7s rep Waisea Nacuqu vows to step up his defence during this weekend’s Canada Sevens in Vancouver.

The Votua, Ba native wants to make this weekend special as it will be his first appearance at the BC Place Stadium.

“This is the first time for me to participate at the Vancouver 7s, I’m looking forward to it, I’m fit and fine.

“We have learnt a lot in Las Vegas and for me  I want to improve on my defence,” Nacuqu said.

It is highly likely that Nacuqu will fill in for Vatemo Ravouvou who will miss out on Fiji’s first pool match against Wales on Sunday morning.

“Looks like I will be in for Ravouvou I’m ready for that,  I’m fit for this weekend.

“I was happy with the way I performed in Las Vegas but this weekend will be different and need to step up,” he added.

The team had a day off yesterday where the players had the chance to explore Vancouver. The Fijians are grouped alongside Samoa, Argentina and Wales in Pool B. They will play their first match against Wales on Sunday at 6:36am, Samoa 10:12am and Argentina at 1:52pm.

Meanwhile, the Gordon Tietjens’ Samoa side faces, a huge blow this weekend as the team will play without veteran Faalemiga Selesele who has a shoulder injury.

According to the Samoa Observer  Tietjens remains optimistic.

“Our real goal is to just keep improving. Our other goal is to get into the Cup competition but we’ve got a tough pool that we’ve got to get through.

“To get into the Cup comp you’ve got to win at least two to get through.  That’s the challenge and that’s the goal to get to the Cup quarterfinal.

“I’m really happy and satisfied with where we’re at.  I want to take the improvement into the next tournament” Tietjens said.
