A family in Nasarata, Taveuni, are mourning the death of their 10-month-old baby boy who allegedly choked on a cap of a highlighter pen on Wednesday.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said they were investigating the incident and awaiting post-mortem results.

“The post-mortem is yet to be conducted. It is scheduled for next week,” Ms Naisoro said.

Relative, Jone Salele, claimed the incident happened last Wednesday. The boy’s mother had gone to the kitchen while his older siblings were studying in the sitting room.

“He was such a happy child, always smiling and his absence is felt in the community,” he said.

He claimed that the toddler put the lid in his mouth.

“When his mother came to the sitting room, the baby’s cries were not heard but she could see that he was choking and tears were rolling down his face,” he said.

He was rushed to the hospital shortly after.

Mr Salele said the family were already gathered but were awaiting post-mortem results which would be conducted this week.

The baby is the youngest of four.
