The Rewa Youth football side got off to a good start when they thrashed Suva Youth 5-1 in the Vodafone Youth League at Fiji Football Academy grounds in Vatuwaqa, Suva yesterday.

Rewa Youth coach Nigel Khan said it was a good effort from the players even though they fielded a couple of new boys.

“The team played well and have definitely been in shape this time around compared to their last couple of games,” Khan said.

“We have a bunch of new players in the squad and they did well considering this is the first time they are playing football at this level.

“It was a learning experience for them and they got a taste of what it was like to play in such a competition.

“I am happy for the win but it is just the start, we still have a few more games to play and we need to keep that consistency.

“But a good start in the competition is crucial, now we just need to do better and be consistent in the competition.” Khan said the competition is tougher this year and they would need to keep their momentum going.

“The tournament is getting hard, teams are now being more competitive. There is more emphasis now on producing young quality players by the teams which is why it is tough.

“Our focus now is on our next game.”

Meanwhile, Navua beat Nasinu 1-0 in the second Youth League clash.
