Phase three of the Read to Lead Fiji programme was launched by patron of the programme and wife of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, Mary.

The launch at Dilkusha Girls School in Nausori marks the third phase of the non governmental organisation’s vision of placing everyday book sets containing 250 new books for the country’s 731 primary schools.

FIJI Water chief executive Rokoseru Nabalarua said the the FIJI Water Foundation was pleased to support the programme that would see 185,000 books being made available to our primary school students.

“The programme is made available with a total contribution of $300, 000 by the FIJI Water Foundation, the Australian government’s direct aid programme assistance of $10,000 in 2015, $49,000 per year commitment from the Ministry of Education since 2016 and the support of the Scholastic Inc., the worlds largest distributor and distributor of children’s books,” Mr Nabalarua said.

“I am sure that the books will be put to good use.”

Phase one he said was first implemented on the grounds where needy schools in rural areas were identified as first recipients.

However, the programme he said was later changed to districts within educational zoning areas seeing the launch of phase two where a 60,000 books were donated within phases one and two.

In launching the programme, Mrs Bainimarama highlighted the need for teachers to spend more time with students by reading to them.  Edited by Naisa Koroi
