Accused Two Front Court for $30,000 Theft

Two men appeared yesterday at the Suva Magistrates Court charged with theft.
The matter was called before Magistrate Makereta Mua. It is alleged that on March 8, Peni Mocemaituba and Ledua Malakai stole $30,000 cash from Scot Daku at Raiwai, Suva.
Police Prosecutor Constable Walter Taito served full phase disclosures. Constable Taito also objected to bail and told the court that only $300 has been recovered.
Malakai’s lawyer, Shivani Pillay, applied for bail and told the court that his client was assaulted while in Police custody, and was not taken to the hospital for a medical check-up.
Mocemaituba’s lawyer, Vilisoni Tuidolo, also applied for bail on the grounds that his client is a farmer from Navua who is supporting his parents.
Magistrate Mua ordered that Malakai be taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for a medical check-up and then be taken to the Totogo Police Station in Suva. As for Mocemaituba he was to be taken to the remand centre.
Magistrate Mua also told the defence lawyers to make a formal bail application.
The case has been adjourned to March 16, for bail application.
