Lami Steelers aim to be a beacon of hope for youths in the infamous Lami suburb of Nadonumai as they prepare for the 2017 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s at the ANZ Stadium next week.

This is the first time for Lami Steelers to participate at the biggest local 7s tournament.

Coach Viliame Tukana shared the club challenge.

“Our biggest challenge is our community. No one seems to believe in this team, there is no support from within our community.

“I kept reminding the players that nothing is impossible.

“I’ve stressed to the players to train hard, produce results so that we can prove them wrong,” Tukana said.

He also reminded the players to trust and believe in themselves.

Olympian Mata pays fee

The club has produced two national 7s rugby reps in Olympian  Viliame Mata who currently plays for Edinburgh in Scotland and current 7s rep Sevuloni Mocenacagi.

Mata paid for the club’s $600 registration fees for the tournament.

“We simply can’t participate because of financial difficulties.

But we are thankful to Mata for helping us.”
