Farmers To Receive Third Cane Payment

Cane farmers will receive their third cane payment of $9.28 per tonne by March 21, 10 days ahead of schedule for the 2016 season.

The total payout to farmers for this payment is around gross $13 million.

This was announced yesterday by the Registrar for the Sugar Industry Tribunal Timothy Brown during a press conference at the Fiji Sugar Corporation headquarters in Lautoka.

“This will bring the total bring the total payment for all three cane payments to $61.84 per tonne,” Mr Brown said.

Fiji Sugar Corporation CEO Graham Clark said the payment was being done after requests from the Sugar Cane Growers Council for an early payment.

He said the Master Award allowed for the payment to be made by end of March each year, but this has been brought forward.

“Our teams are working on processing all payments and have it in the farmers’ bank accounts by March 21.”

Mr Clark said they took into account what the growers requested.

Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Sundresh Chetty said the second payment was made in Labasa in December 2016 and in Lautoka in January this year.

“The growers had requested for the third cane payment since no special cane payment was made this year,” Mr Chetty said.

“I am happy FSC has accepted our request for an early third cane payment.

“Although the expectations from the growers were for a higher payment, we are have with what we have been given as the 2016 season was hit by TC Winston and crop production had dropped.”

Mr Chetty said the industry needed to work together to improve production.
