Fiji’s position in co-hosting the United Nations Oceans Conference in New York gives everyone in the Pacific an added advantage, says New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Mark Ramsden.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun at the regional preparatory meeting currently underway at Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Mr Ramsden said New Zealand strongly supported Fiji’s bid to co-host the conference with Sweden.

“I think Fiji co-hosting the Oceans Conference gives all of us an added advantage and it was one of the reasons why New Zealand was so strong in supporting Fiji for the Oceans Conference. Oceans issues are something we share and we work closely together with our neighbours in the Pacific on them.”

He said the conference would be major and very significant.

“From the point of view of New Zealand, the Oceans Conference is going to be really big. It is going to be an important conference and New Zealand was an early supporter of the initiative.

“We worked very closely with the Fijian delegation in New York to bring it to fruition so it’s really nice to see the process being well underway now.

“We are very interested in the ‘Call for Action’. We think the Call for Action should reflect really clearly the Pacific regional priorities. The priorities we all share and one of the major things for New Zealand we want to see in the Call for Action is a strong statement on fisheries subsidies,” Mr Ramsden said.
