Government spends about $3 billion a year for both capital and operational expenditure.

Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khayium said operational expenditure accounted for 40 per cent of the $3 billion and 60 per cent went to capital expenditure.

He made the comments during a talanoa session centred on the coming budget with staff members and management of Fiji Airways Group in Nadi yesterday.

“Interestingly enough, in 2004 for example, the total amount of money government spent in 2004, 85 per cent of that went to operational expenses,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum added there had been a growth of wholesale and retail trade, importation of goods and a huge increase in construction.

This, he said, was significant in boosting Fiji’s economy and allowed for the circulation of money within the country.
