Churchill Park’s new athletics track had a direct impact on yesterday’s Lautoka Secondary Schools Zone athletics meet.

Twenty records were smashed on the first day with Natabua High School and Jasper Williams High School dominating.

In the girls’ division, JWHS led the medal tally with 18 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze medals,  NHS second (2, 3, 3) and St Thomas High third (1, 0,2).

In the boys division, NHS led with 21 gold, 13 silver and six bronze medals, Tilak High second (2, 1, 2) and Lautoka Muslim third  (1, 2, 1).

Laisani Likudeva of JWHS smashed a 26- year-old record in the intermediate girl’s long jump.

The record was set in 1991 by Alani Latianara of NHS with a jump of 5.47 metres and this was bettered by Likudeva with a jump of 5.65m.

Another record to tumble was the senior girl’s long jump where Maca Tamu of JWHS jumped 4.89 metres to smash the record of 4.5 metres set in 1993 by Naivosa of JWHS.

NHS sprinter Tyron Chambers smashed a three-year-old record in the intermediate boys 100 metres final when he clocked 10.84 secs to beat the old record in 2014 of 10.94 secs by Alfred Smith, also of NHS.
