Tamavua Primary School headboy vows to keep his school clean and mosquito free.

These were the words of Year 8 student, Jasveen Singh, 13, of Cunningham Road in Nasinu, Suva, during the launch of the Fight the Bite Clean-Up Fiji 2017 at his school in Tamavua, yesterday.

He said the launch would not only benefit the school and students but their families at home too.

“We are taught about the clean-up campaign to not only act on it at school but also at home by keeping our homes and compounds clean.

“Like we clean our schools, we have to clean our home so our country can be clean and mosquito free,”Jasveen said.

He said as the headboy of the school, he would make sure that his school was well-presented to all.

“It is my duty to make sure that my schoolmates follow the lessons taught in the clean-up campaign,” he said.

“I will make sure that I ask my schoolmates to take a walk around the school compound and pick up any rubbish, clean the tyres and containers that collect water so that mosquitoes do not have a place to breed.”

Ministry of Health and Medical Services deputy secretary hospital services, Dr Luisa Cikamatana, said it was essential to take an approach that involves everyone to reduce the transmission of mosquito borne diseases.

“We should know that the most effective method to reduce the number of mosquitoes in our lives is to reduce their breeding sites,” Dr Cikamatana said.

“Together we can clean up our Fiji and stop the spread of dengue and other mosquito borne diseases.”
