There was a total of 312 new cases of tuberculosis diagnosed last year with 26 confirmed deaths, said National TB control officer Dr Frank Underwood.

Dr Underwood said the main reason for fatalities was the late presentation of patients after the infection had ravaged the body.

“Some of them already had diabetes and the complication of diabetes,” said Dr Underwood.

He said it was important that the Ministry of Health became very systematic in the screening of TB amongst diabetic patients.

“So we’re trying to introduce this to special outpatients clinics,” he said.

The first free screening of TB for the year was held yesterday at the Diabetic Centre in Suva.

People who were screened were diabetic patients.

Dr Underwood said most TB patients still faced stigma in their work place and creating awareness on the issue was important in our communities.

About 36 clinic patients showed up for the screening with today’s screening will be held from 7.30am to 11am.

Vude queen Laisa Vulakoro will be chief guest at the World TB Day celebrations tomorrow at the Tamavua Hospital. This year’s theme is “Leave No One Behind”.
