Maharaj: Law Benefits Authority
LTA board chairperson Vijay Maharaj

LTA board chairperson Vijay Maharaj said the amended law would benefit the authority in their role as regulators and drivers because they would have more time to pay up their fines.

“This amendment will give a greater control to LTA as a regulatory body, to manage its own affairs in collecting the fines which hitherto (prior to the amendment) ended up in court creating huge backlogs in the court system.

“The amendment generally allows more flexibility in the way payment of fines will be managed in future.

“I am sure the public would be happy with the changes in the law that has taken place,” Mr Maharaj said.

With regards to the penalty, he does not think there would be too many people who would have to pay late payment penalties.

“I am also of the view that there would not be very many people who would be subject to departure prohibition order but where it does occur it would be to ensure that your legitimate debt is paid before you leave Fiji,” Mr Maharaj said.
