No Contest For Fiji Teachers Union Elections: Singh

The Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) is expected to have their General Elections on April 8.
This was confirmed by FTU general secretary Agni Deo Singh, yesterday.
However there are no new nominations.
He said only 11 nominations were received and there will be no contest.
“All the national executive members have been re-nominated unopposed.”
He said the nominations were called by the Fiji Elections Office whereby an objection and withdrawal period was given.
“We live in a democratic community. There is a constitution and there is a term for all office bearers.”
Mr Singh said the constitution provided members the freedom to elect members whenever they felt that the office bearers were not serving according to their satisfaction.
He said the election also gave the opportunity to every member who may like to contest and serve the Union.
The role of the Union is important as it exists to safeguard the interest of the members to ensure that they are treated fairly and to continue to work towards improving their terms and conditions of work, according to Mr Singh.
“Apart from that, as a Teachers Union, we contribute constructively towards the formulation of the education policy to ensure that quality education is delivered and accessible to all students all over the country regardless of their status or location,” he said.
He said the union holds the Ministry accountable to the students and community.
