Major road upgrading works in Suva valued at over $22m has started.

This falls under one of Fiji Roads Authority projects called “Suva Arterial Road Upgrading Project”, also known as SARUP.

Fiji Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer, John Hutchinson  said: “This project is about upgrading and improving sealed roads accommodating large volumes of traffic.

“Two packages of work, SARUP 1 and SARUP 2 have been drawn up.”

He said the authority had received loan funds from the Asian Development Band and World Bank for the Transport Infrastructure Sector Project.

SARUP 1 and SARUP 2 are included in the multiple infrastructure improvement projects on roads and bridges around the country.

Mr Hutchinson said SARUP 1 was advertised in 2016 and the contract was awarded to China Railway Group 5 on 17 November 2016.

Traffic congestion is expected in parts of the capital when the project starts.

The FRA said they would endeavour to communicate any major inconvenience via the media.

 

Below are the roads that will upgraded under SARUP 1:

Queens Road: 2200 metres- Suvavou and Delainavesi, starting at the Tamavua River Bridge as far as the Lami Bridge

Walu Bay Roundabout/ Edinburgh Drive: 1700 metres- as far as the Princess and Waimanu Roads Intersection

  Ratu Mara Road: Princess and Waimanu Roads Intersection: 900 metres-as far as Lakeba Street

   Kings Road: Ratu Mara/ Mead Road Roundabout: 1200m to Ratu Dovi Road

    Kings Road: 1200 metres- Ratu Dovi to Khalsa Road Intersection

  Kings Road: 1600metres- Pilling Road to Matanikorovatu Road (Hansons)

Victoria Parade: 150 metres- McArthur Street to Gordon Street

   Gaji Road/ Grantham Road Roundabout: 500 metres- to Belo Street

  Ratu Mara Road Roundabout

 

Other projects currently underway include:

  Vatuwaqa and Stinson Parade Bridge that are currently under construction.

The Bailey Bridge installation work at Kasavu.

 A footpath work is under way at Cunningham.

 

SARUP 1 is expected to complete for all sites by August 2018.
