SODELPA Opposition MP Niko Nawaikula yesterday told Parliament that he could say whatever he wanted even if it is lies.

He made this statement in a heated debate on a motion by the National Federation Party MP, Biman Prasad, about the dairy industry.

The motion was thrown out by Parliament.

Mr Nawaikula claimed that Government formed Southern Cross Foods Limited and brought in CJ Patel to manage the industry.

He said the industry was fully controlled by Government and there was great need to give back the industry to its rightful owners.

“Madam Speaker I would like to raise a point of order that the honourable member has the habit of not telling the truth,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum responded.

The truth, he said, Government didn’t form Southern Cross Foods Limited and that CJ Patel was not invited.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said 16 companies applied via expression of interests and it was awarded to Southern Cross Foods Limited.

He said it was factually incorrect that Southern Cross was formed by Government. It was also factually incorrect that CJ Patel was invited by Government, he added.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum told Mr Nawaikula: “You are a lawyer, you need to understand what you are saying. Speak the truth, don’t lie.”

He said the information from Mr Nawaikula was wrong.

“Therefore I am standing up, talking to him. It’s not correct and he needs to withdraw that.

“The Opposition on a number of occasions make statements that are factually incorrect,” he said.

Dr Jiko Luveni asked Mr Nawaikula to withdraw his statement. He responded “I withdraw.”

However, before he resumed his seat, Mr Nawaikula said: “I can say whatever I want even if it’s false.”
