The sudden passing of a renowned Pacific poet following a short illness in New Zealand has shocked family and friends.

The late Teresia Teaiwa who was of i-Kiribati, African and American heritage was born in Honolulu, Hawaii but was raised in Fiji.

She was the director of Va’aomanu Pasifika at the Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.

Also being an academic and author Ms Teaiwa is described by her colleagues as a groundbreaking scholar in the research of Pacific Island culture.

According to former fellow University of the South Pacific lecturer, Cresantia Frances Koya -Vaka’uta said Ms Teaiwa was one of the founding members of the New Wave Writer’s Collective.

“She was very instrumental in creative writing and nurturing new voices and her sudden passing has been a shock to all of us,” said Ms Vaka’uta.

Ms Teaiwa’s works include research in militarism and gender in the Pacific and women’s activism in the Pacific.

She was known to having deeply explored the issues that affected most Pacific islanders and taught history and politics for five years at the University of the South Pacific in Suva before moving to New Zealand to teach Pacific studies at the Victoria University.

The late Ms Teaiwa’s funeral service will be held in New Zealand today. She was 48. Edited by Rusiate Mataika
