Opposition Parliamentarians were reminded yesterday that there were other schools in the country apart from Queen Victoria School.

Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy responded to their questions by saying the ministry looked after every school around the country.

“Every school has iTaukei students. We need to deal with all schools and not only focus on QVS,” Mr Reddy said.

A debate had erupted in Parliament over the conditions of septic tanks at QVS in Tailevu.

The war of words came after SODELPA Opposition MP, Ro Kiniviliame Kiliraki, posed questions on the issue.

Mr Kiliraki said parents had made complaints over the condition of the septic tanks at the boys boarding school in Tailevu.

He praised the Indonesian government on the construction of two new dormitories after the school was badly damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston. However, Ro Kiliraki said there was no proper facilitation of the septic tanks in those two buildings and the current septic tanks could not cater for more than 300 students accommodated in those dormitories.

The Government, he said, should consider the fact that the school had been in existence since the early 1900s.

“Parents have raised concern over the stench caused by the condition of the septic tanks,” Ro Kiliraki said.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula, said the school needed to be fully fixed so it could meet Occupational Health System standards.

Mr Reddy said the two new dormitories had their own septic tank connections and parents should raise their grievances with the relevant authorities.

There are 1085 students currently at the school, of which 936 are boarders and 149 are day scholars.
