The Leader of the Opposition, Ro Teimumu Kepa thinks that a river bank protection project would only focus on Rewa, says Inia Seruiratu.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, the Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management was responding to questions posed by Ro Teimumu.

She asked about what types of effective river bank protection the ministry would provide for villages in the Rewa province.

“It is obvious the question was only for those in the Rewa Delta rather than the whole of Fiji,” Mr Seruiratu responded.

He said the programme would cater for provinces around Fiji and not Rewa only.

“We look at the whole of Fiji rather than focusing only on one community,” Mr Seruiratu.

He said the project was conducted in other parts of Fiji.

The ministry, Mr Seruiratu said, had four types of river bank protection to mitigate this vulnerability.

SODELPA Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula said the question was based on Rewa because the system was not working there.

In response, Mr Seruiratu said: “We can’t fight nature, only nature adjusts well, there are solutions….”

He said different projects would focus on different localities like the Qawa River and Sigatoka River.

Mr Seruiratu said carrying out the project was costly and ecological solutions did not work because of changes in weather patterns.
