The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, yesterday told Parliament why an Indonesian ship, D.L. Marigold, was denied entry into Fiji.

He was responding to a question by Government MP, Netani Rika.

According to evidence, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the ship was ordered to leave New Zealand shores because the vessel was severely fouled with tube worms and other organisms that would affect New Zealand’s indigenous species and marine life.

The vessel, he said, then set sail for Suva, but then was prohibited entry.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji acted promptly after they were informed by relevant authorities from New Zealand.
