Mt St Mary’s School, Nadi, newly inducted headboy Fenton Williams knows wearing the badge was not for show, but comes with great responsibilities and challenges.

The 13-year-old welcomes those challenges knowing his teachers and fellow prefects will guide him.

Receiving his badge the Lovoni, Ovalau, lad thanked his parents for the wonderful work they’ve done raising him up.

Headgirl Joan McGowan, 13, said, “2016 was not the best year for most of us due to certain events that had occurred such as Tropical Cyclone Winston.”

Joan said it may have affected their academic performance.

“This year, my fellow prefects and I will try to help create a change, and build a better learning environment at Mt St Mary’s,” the Vavau, Tonga, lass who has maternal links to Lakeba, Lau, said.

The duo were inducted school heads at Mount Saint Mary’s School yesterday.

The Martintar, Nadi, based school has a roll of 702 students. Sixty-six prefects were inducted to the student council this year.

Chief guest Reverend Father Aloi Greiler (SM) said the three things involved in the task are surprises, confidence and questions.

“Mt St Mary School is a big school. And working to prepare students to be successful in life,” Father Greiler said.

“Now you have the badge and blessings and your character will be tested with responsibilities. Help those who need assistance. Leadership is not floating up there in the air but leadership is faced.”

Father Greiler challenged the students to be leaders either in their church, villages and society after 30 years of their lives.
