Chief Justice Athony Gates has praised Fiji’s leading writer, Professor Satendra Nandan, after launching his latest book on Friday.

The  new book of poems is called “Across the Seven Seas”.

This will be followed by the launch of a book of essays, “Dispatches from Distant Shores”, soon.

Chief Justice Anthony Gates said he was honoured to launch the book.

“One of the purposes of a book launch is that you can hear from a person who has kept to the established protocols and therefore not read the book,” he said with a smile.

“Nonetheless he can tell you something about the book, sufficient to goad you into purchasing the book tonight, and prepare you to feel confident that you can talk loudly and knowingly about the book to the chattering classes and thus avoid the tedium of actually having to read the book.”

On a more serious note, Chief Justice Gates praised Professor Nandan for his tremendous work on the book.

“He (Professor Nandan) has a feel for the right phrase. You will encounter several ringing phrases. These are not philosophical essays, in the mould of Francis Bacon. But they make many profound observations on life in general, and indeed on our life and times.”

He said people in Fiji needed to listen to ideas more respectfully, and less personally.

“In the author’s note, whilst thanking Peter Lomas publisher and CEO of the Fiji Sun, for allowing him space in the Opinion and Literary Corner columns, he says his intention was to introduce current affairs, ideas on books to interested readers, especially in Fiji. And keep the literary lights burning in the landscapes of my first home.

“Those are the 3 themes of his essays. Some of you will like the comments on current affairs and some will prefer his discussion of books and ideas. They deal with life. They are fresh, frank and absorbing.”

He said the good news was that improvements were being noticed gradually behind the scenes but there was much work to be done.

“As one of the blurbs said correctly, the author demonstrates a life of political awareness and ethical responsibility. Awareness rather than politics itself is Nandan’s emblem,” he said.

He urged the general public to buy the book.

“There is something for everyone. You will laugh, you will cry, you will have some disagreements with the author. You will ponder some simple matters deeply. But you will be in great company,” he said.

Professor Satendra Nandan’s fans filled the Pacifica Fusion Restaurant at the University of the South Pacific to grab a chance to meet the author and to witness the launch.

After long nights and months of dedication into writing his new book, Professor Nandan said he was glad his hard work had finally paid off.
