Only three political parties took part in a ‘Unity Walk’ yesterday organised by a group of youths.

The invitation was sent to all political party leaders, but only the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Fiji United Freedom Party were present.

The ‘Unity Walk’ was organised by Lavetanalagi Seru, 24, from Tacirua East. Inspired by the unity of his community, he decided to organise the event for political parties.

SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka said: “We just decided to do something different today and have a unity work to demonstrate our commitment to the unity of purpose and show people we are united.”

PDP leader Lynda Tubuya said: “The message is of unity and we have got young at heart people, political leaders, youth leaders and their families to support this walk.”

“The Unity Walk is just a start, …I think it’s just the beginning. We could have more people but there was lot of events happening today and it was quite last minute.”

FUFP leader Jagath Karynaratne said: “The idea was starting from the youth is basically to symbolise and send messages of unity across.”

The Walk started at 6am from the Nausori Market to Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva.
