Ovalau overcame a lot of challenges to successfully host their athletics zonal competition at Nasau Park, Levuka on Friday.

The old capital was severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston last year and could not hold their zone competition.

Meet manager Golden Varea said the cyclone destroyed almost all their zone records for the past 30 years.

“We have had a very successful zone meet despite the weather,” Varea said.

“The track was flooded and we had to advise our athletes to be cautious but despite that everything went smoothly.”

Twenty six records were broken and compared these to what we achieved in 2015.

“The athletes enjoyed themselves despite the condition.

“It was an incredible day for us; we have been through so much and the dedication of these young athletes to push through regardless was really good to see.”

St John’s College (SJC)  won the boys division amassing 21 gold, 21 silver and 24 bronze medals, Delana Methodist High School second (17, 20, 12) while Levuka Public School finished third (12, 9, 14).

SJC also took out the girls title with 19 gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze medals, Levuka Public  second (16, 12, 10), Delana Methodist High finished third  (9, 13, 13).
