Bhatnagar presents cheques to fire victims

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar last week presented cash cheques of $1000 to families who lost their belongings in a fire in Korovou Town.

The assistance is provided under the Fire Victims Relief Fund of the Department of Social Welfare, which is available to all families who are fire victims.

The recipients were grateful that Ms Bhatnagar had visited them with ministry officers and this demonstrated Government’s commitment and quick response to assist the needy families in Fiji.

Ms Bhatnagar said losing a home to a fire was a traumatic experience for any family or person. The incidence of house fires was a national problem especially a crippling burden for low-income earners whose homes are destroyed, she said.

“The Ministry will also work with stakeholders to try and get assistance to help them rebuild their house,” Ms Bhatnagar said.

The grants of $1000 are intended to provide immediate relief like food and new clothing and basic needs.

Ms Bhatnagar said the Ministry would go out of its way to assist families like this to help rebuild their lives.

Assistance is based on fire assessment reports from the National Fire Authority and the verification done by welfare officers.
