Melbourne Rebels winger, Marika Koroibete, fulfiled his promise when he bought his dad an $85,000 Ford Ranger.

“When I was a little boy I promised my dad I’ll buy him a car, hope you will like your new ride, old man!” Koroibete posted on social media.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Koroibete’s dad Iliesa Rokodrika said he was proud of his son’s achievements in rugby league before making his switch to rugby union late last year.

He said what makes Koroibete special is the fact that he is always there for his family.

“I’m proud of my son for being able to go overseas and even play for the Wallabies,” Rokodrika said.

“Ever since my son left for Australia, he has been supporting our family financially and with his support we have been able to build our new house in the village.

“I was amazed when my son bought me this four wheel drive worth about $85,000 and as of now I still can’t get over it.”

Rokodrika said life has been a struggle for them especially raising Koroibete in the village of Naraiyawa in the interior of Namosi.

“Today, I’m thankful that Marika continues to adhere and uphold the principles of family values that we taught him while he was growing up. We feel blessed that as parents we have raised such a fine son like him who continues to value all our teachings and the principles we stood for.”

Rokodrika said they are grateful to Koroibete’s wife Emma for continuing to support their son.

“I want to challenge all our overseas based- rugby players not to forget their families back home but instead help them in whatever way they can for them to have a better life.”
