The Vodafone Tiliva 7s tournament in Kadavu was officially launched in Suva yesterday. The tournament set for April 27-28 at Tiliva Dsitrict Primary School is offering $5000 to the winning team.

Already the tournament officials have indicated that they are looking to accommodate 24 teams.

During the launch at the Fiji Trade Union Congress boardroom, tournament spokesperson, Lynda Tabuya said, they are happy to host the tournament after a lapse of 10-years and they are taking up the initiative to support the development of island rugby.

“The theme for Tiliva 7s is ‘Supporting island rugby at its best’ and this will be the first time after 10 years that Kadavu will be hosting such an event and it will be open to any team in the country to participate.

“Also, there will be 24 top men’s teams vying for the Tiliva 7s trophy. The total prize money will be $12,600 with the winning team taking home $5,000.

“In terms of support this tournament is backed by the village and assisted by nearby villages,” Tabuya said.

She said they are grateful to the Fiji Rugby Union for supporting the tournament.

“This tournament is sanctioned by FRU and they will also be providing three referees and one referee’s manager. We are happy to have Tevita Rokovereni who is an international referee who will be attending the tournament. We are proud to host this tournament that will really empower our youths as they see the development of rugby in Kadavu.

“We used to be part of the island zone so it is our hope with this tournament happening again we would want to re-join the division and be part of the main rugby circuit again,” she added.

The four top clubs that have booked their place for the tournament are Ratu Filise, Uluinakau, Buca Babaas and the National Fire Authority.

There are other clubs that have started paying their registration fees. The funds raised from the tournament will be directed to the development of the village school.
