Three years of hard work for former bank employee Shirleen Sahai paid off last night after she walked away with the outstanding Bachelor of Arts gold medal award at the University of the South Pacific.

“I use to work for a bank for more than 20 years before I started studying and tonight it’s a bonus and a lovely recognition,” said Ms Sahai.

Ms Sahai was one of the 49 students who were awarded gold medals last night in a special ceremony at US Laucala Campus attended by family, friends, and staff.

Ms Sahai also received a double gold medal for the Most Outstanding Student Majoring in Psychology and Social Work under the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education.

She said she was hoping her achievement last night would be a source of inspiration to all women out there especially single mothers.

The top Vice Chancellor’s All Rounder prize winner was Kamniyata Kaajal.

Ms Kaajal said: “I just want to thank my parents, lecturers and deans and all my friends.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Derrick Armstrong said the university was a leader in tertiary education in the region through the quality of their programmes which was accredited to international standards.

Both winners are looking forward with over 1500 students expected to graduate tomorrow.
