Big Boost For 2018 Poll

The 2018 general election received a major boost yesterday with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MOU was between the Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).

They will be working closely together for the preparation of the election after the MoU signing at the AEC headquarters in Canberra.

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Suresh Chandra said the document symbolised the close collaboration and partnership both institutions enjoy.

“Since our appointment, the Electoral Commission has noted that elections are becoming more complex and demanding. Given this trend, it is no longer sensible, nor feasible for any one electoral management body to operate in isolation.”

He said Electoral Management Bodies must combine efforts and work closely as partners to pursue excellence in election administration.

“The Australian Electoral Commission came in to provide essential technical training and support to the Electoral Commission and the Fijian Elections Office in 2014 and since then it has continuously collaborated with both organisations in the field of election management.

“The AEC is admirably leading the charge through its intense efforts in the internationally recognised Building Resources in Democracy and Elections (BRIDGE) training programmes as well as its extensive expertise and knowledge in running large scale elections based on internationally accepted good practices.”

The MoU will provide the FEO and AEC a platform to:

Exchange information and materials;

Exchange visiting experts and employees of the Parties;

Share experience in election management;

Foster joint research and studies pertaining to the effective administration of elections;

Organise meetings and seminars related to election management and other issues of mutual interest; and

Any other form of co-operative activities mutually arranged between the Parties.

The MoU was signed by Tom Rogers, the Australian Electoral Commissioner and Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem.

The signing coincided with the first meeting of the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrators Network (PIANZEA) Advisory Group.

Mr Saneem serves as the Melanesian Representative to the PIANZEA Advisory Group.
