Namosi Secondary School Mateo Matavura won his first gold medal in the 3000 metres Open grade during the Suva Zone One at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

The 18-year-old from Namosi village dedicated his win to fellow student and friend  Panapasa Nailiutaki who died last week from a kidney failure.

“I am so happy about winning my first gold medal at the zone, this is the best I have done compared to last year,” Matavura said.

“I really want to dedicate this win to Panapasa, he passed away after a kidney failure; he was so young to be taken away from his friends and family.

“He was my inspiration and I am really happy that I got my first gold medal not only for myself but for my school.

“The zone has been really been tough but all my hard work and training has really paid off.”

Matavura clocked 10:13:65 ahead of Savneel Sanal Chand of DAV College who finished second (10:42:62) while Ratu Isikeli Rokuruibua of WSS finished third (10:53:35).
