Tourism Fiji chief executive officer, Matthew Stoeckel says all its marketing and promotional activities are continuing to get great traction in the market.

And that is why the tourism industry was optimistic for a great year ahead, he said.

This was further evidently explained in the Statistical News from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, Government statistician, Epeli Waqavonovono.

Provisional visitor arrivals for the month of January this year was at 64,943 according to the statistics.

The Bureau stated it was a record for the month of January and represented an increase of 12.5 per cent compared to the year earlier.

Visitors in this period arriving into the country accounted for 72.6 per cent of the arrivals while others had come to visit families and relatives and other reasons.

Meanwhile, majority of visitors to Fiji in February were in the age range 25 to 64 (68.4%), which accounted for the vast majority of the working age population.

The top five Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries for the month of February are:

Professional workers – 7872

Legislators – 6228

Technician and related workers – 4528

Service Workers – 4461

Craft workers – 2006

 

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups.

The categories and numbers are:

Retirees, housewives, children and others – 9721

Students – 6087
