Trade unionist Daniel Urai said the best bet to win a seat in the upcoming 2018 General Elections was to either join the ruling Fiji First Party or Opposition party SODELPA.

Mr Urai is the president of the Fiji Trades Union Congress and general secretary of the National Union of Hotel and Catering Employees.

Mr Urai said this was only logical  prospect considering the five per cent threshold that political parties needed to qualify for a seat in Parliament.

Asked whether he would consider applying for a seat with either of these two major parties, Mr Urai said anything could happen.

“Politics is politics so who knows what could happen next year,” Mr Urai said.

He was barred from taking part in the 2014 general elections over some legal matters, including an assault case where he said he was fined $20.

“I have not yet made up my mind whether I will stand in this coming election or not.”

“It’s still some time away and I will see a bit later on,” he said.

Mr Urai said he was not associated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the last election of which fellow unionist, Felix Anthony, resigned after PDP failed to win a seat.

Mr Anthony has since resigned from PDP.

“Since I was not standing I did not have anything to do with PDP,” Mr Urai said.

Mr Urai said he had not given thought if he would stand for PDP.

Mr Anthony was out of the country and could not be reached for a comment.
