The Museum Open Day andNa Koro Market is back.

The focus for these events is to present Fijian culture and the arts.

The Museum Open Day is from 10am to 2pm on Saturday while the Na Koro Market is from 9am to 4pm.

Market organiser Peter Sipeli said: “While it appeared as though we have been asleep, we have been working slowly and quietly in the back ground.

“We needed to rethink how we reframe ourselves in a space quite saturated with markets and present a new concept.

“Our focus is to present Fijian culture and the arts and we have been working with the Fiji Arts Council.

“We present a small market scene this Saturday but we will be working over the next six months, to build this Fijian cultural scene where we can not only see and purchase local crafts but actively learn how to make and create alongside these wise and wonderful women.”

The Na Koro Market is now a project of the museum and it has moved to coincide with the Museum Open Day.

“The events work together for the promotion of our cultural heritage, in the Thurston Gardens that is over 100 years old,” Mr Sipeli said.

“We are also partnering up with the Craft Society to be ensure that we have women from the society at the market, to not only exhibit and market their crafts but to have workshops so young and old can learn basic mat weaving, jewellery making, masi printing.

“This Saturday people are able to tour the museum and look forward to the educational exhibitions by National Archives and the museum educational team on various topics on cultural knowledge and history.”

Mr Sipeli said the museum worked solidly each month for their open day to engage the public to appreciate its rich cultural history.
